Since the first Walmart store opened in 1962 in Rogers, Arkansas, we've been dedicated to making a difference in the lives of our customers. Our business is the result of Sam Walton's visionary leadership, along with generations of associates focused on helping customers and communities save money and live better. This rich heritage defines who we are and what we do today.

Today is the start of our Colleague Thank You Week and over the next few days we'll be celebrating all our colleagues but also recognising those colleagues who you've told us have gone above and beyond. To kick-start the week, in the film below I've shared my own thank you message and some exciting news in the film above - keep an eye on the comes this week where you'll find out more!

Thank you to everyone who has shared a message of thanks so far - it's times like these it's clear how supportive we really are of one another and how much that matters and makes a difference. If you'd like to share you message of thanks, please email ourasda@asda.co.uk.

It feels a long time ago, but you may remember back in January we announced the launch of our first sustainability store in Middleton, where we said we would test ideas that will reduce the amount of packaging we use. Customers write to me regularly asking what steps are we taking to reduce the amount of plastic we’re using, in particular, and I’m clear that we have a real responsibility to challenge ourselves to do the right things for our environment.

While Covid-19 put our plans on hold for a few months, there has been a lot of work continuing in the background and this week is a big milestone, as we have opened the Middleton sustainability store to the world. I wanted to start by saying a big thank you to everyone that has worked so hard to get the new ideas in place, and in particular colleagues at the Middleton store, who I know are really excited.

This is not a challenge we can solve alone and we’ve had great support from a number of suppliers such as Unilever, Kellogg’s and Vimto, who are collaborating with us to help find solutions to reduce plastic waste. The store includes exciting and innovative ideas to help our customers live more sustainably – which you can read about below - but very significantly, we’re making sure they don’t have to pay extra for it.

That’s an important principle for us and so we are today also announcing Greener at Asda Price – an aspiration that customers won’t pay more for making sustainable choices when they shop with us.

This is already true in Middleton, where all the sustainable alternatives are the same price or cheaper than their packaged equivalents, and we’ll be working through line by line to make sure this is true for our stores nationally.

We will listen to feedback from our colleagues and customers on our trials over the next few months to see what works and what needs improving.
